Computer Science

Our section brings together Computer Science and Healthcare to develop technologies that make society more inclusive, safer, and smarter.

Head of Section: Stefania Serafin.

We address two major societal challenges: first, enabling people to participate fully in society, education, and working life, and second, protecting critical infrastructures, including secure and resilient communication networks. Through accessible, assistive, and human-centered technologies, we create solutions that support equitable participation, including for people affected by disability, illness, or changing abilities.

Within Human-Centered Computing, we put people at the heart of technology. We investigate how humans perceive, interact with, and experience increasingly complex digital systems—and how these systems can be designed to be intuitive, effective, accessible, and safe.

At the intersection of Healthcare Technology and Extended Reality (XR), we explore advanced sensing, neural interfaces and movement control, human perception, immersive technologies and analytics, and biomedical signal processing. These capabilities enable new approaches to health and well-being, accessibility, prosthetics, rehabilitation, and assistive technologies.

Within Secure and Intelligent Systems, we develop AI-driven decision support, intelligent monitoring and measurement technologies, and secure digital infrastructures for robust, data-driven engineering. Our research builds on strong expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity, and communication systems.

Across these areas, our ambition is  to build  technologies that work for the benefit of society.
