Tietgen Kollegiet Student's Residence
Round buildings are rare, though for a multitude of reasons quite rational. One of the sources of inspiration for the Tietgen student residence was the traditional Tulou construction of southeast China. The round building has seven storeys. Five vertical lines divide the building both visually and functionally into sections and also serve as continuous passages that provide access from outside to the central courtyard and to the different storeys. Transmission of sound was a major problem in the construction. The façade material is tombak, an alloy of copper & zink, the content of zink is only around 10% making the material quite unsustainable! … But it is durable and pretty.
